Happy New Year

We had a most amazing, wonderful Christmas here in Sunyani.  I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about it being back to just Louie and I again on Christmas with no other friends or family around.  It was just perfect.  The only thing that could have made it better would be to have friends and family around.  Funny thing is I haven't been homesick at all yet.  I think as long as we are together I may never feel that.  We cooked the yummiest food we had ( I honestly don't remember what we ate that night) I think left over pizza.  Not like American Pizza at all.  It was still good.  It had chicken and mozzarella on it.  We watched some Christmas movies and then read the Christmas stories out of the Bible and Book of Mormon.  The Next day we invited our zone of missionaries to the District Center and ordered them some pizza for lunch.  It was a nice day.  Christmas can be hard on these missionaries.  It can be a day the...

Merry Christmas from Sunyani!

Tuesday I met with a couple friends to discuss a humanitarian project.  I really like this one and I am hopeful this will work out.  My friend Mary wants to start a Clinic that will provide preventative health care for Women.  Specifically mammograms.   Many Women here die from breast cancer because there is no screening and a lot of misinformation that circulates concerning the screening process.  Mary is a go getter.  She approached the Queen Mother of Sunyani to see what she could do to help.  The Queen Mother thought it was a worthwhile project and and offered to donate some land for the clinic.  I was talking with another Senior Missionary from our mission by the name of Elder Samuelson.  Elder Samuelson used to teach at the Medical School at the University of Utah.  He also thinks it is a worthwhile project.  Mary and Abigail will be writing up a proposal to the church to see if we can get this going.  We will be rev...

Loving every moment in Sunyani Ghana Africa

This week was busy.  We were asked to do apartment checks for the young missionary's.  They are all amazing responsible young men and women.  Mostly, they wanted us to do an inventory of what they had so that all apartments can be mostly uniform as they are transferred around.  We started with the Zone Leaders in Fiapra here close to where we live.  We quickly figured out why every missionary that lives in that apartment contracts milaria.  They had some broken windows that had never been reported and so the mosquitos where coming in at night and biting them.  We quickly got on that and were able to get their windows repaired.   We had an adventure driving out to Kenyasi.  The road to Kenyasi is extremely bad.  They have big logging trucks that drive down these roads and they just destroy the roads and there is no way they can keep up with keeping the road in good repair.  There was some areas of the road we couldn't go a...

Things are starting to ramp up around here.  Saturday night we had the Ghana National elections.  It was quite similar to the United States in that it really came down to 2 candidates.  One Candidate won and the other quickly conceded, so there was no significant rioting.  No rioting where we are at.  I guess there was a little bit in small isolated areas but all in all it was a peaceful transfer of power. We had a zone conference and we got to get together with the Techiman zone.  That was fun to all be together and see missionaries we hadn't seen in a while.  I'm getting kind of attached to these young missionaries.  They are simply wonderful!  For those that don't know, a zone in a mission consists of about 10 to 15 companionships of young missionaries.  We are in the Sunyani zone.   Here are some of our new favorite people!  The Elders wanted to wear bow ties.   Our mission president has to travel about...

Making Friends

We have been staying busy attending meetings, baptisms and helping out where we can.  Sunday November 24th we attended the Estates branch for Sacrament meeting and then we stopped by the Nkwabeng branch and attended Priesthood and Relief Society.  The Estates branch had their primary program.  Only 4 young ones participated.  They sang all the songs and gave all the talks.  One primary child recited the first 4 arcticles of faith by memory.  I was very impressed. The Estates Primary! Nkwabeng Relief Society Monday we drove out to Domfete to attend a self reliance class.  That Branch is about an hour north of us.  We were stopped at a police check point.  They were very nice and asked if we have some literature to share.  We gave them a pamphlet about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  This branch is interesting because they meet at an open air school in the middle of a small court yard under a nice shade tree to hold their Self Reli...
